Skanderberg was Albania’s greatest military commander of his time and later became a national hero for his long resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. His story is one of conflict, identity, loyalty, and transformation - shaped by shifting cultural and religious influences throughout his life.
In this painting, I wanted to portray Skanderberg as a figure of power and duality. The armor is not merely decorative, but symbolic: each individual element represents another victorious battle, turning the body into a visual record of resistance and achievement. The eyes carry this complexity as well, with one pupil containing the Islamic star and the other a Christian cross. This contrast reflects his life path - raised Christian, later handed over to the Ottomans and educated in Islam, before eventually returning to Christianity.
This painting was also created as a private commission. It combines historical meaning with personal artistic interpretation, presenting Skanderberg as a symbol of struggle, memory, and national identity.
