Planetary Desk Lamp

This piece is currently presented as a conceptual design. While fully developed in its function and engineering approach, the Turn Table has not yet entered production. The project reflects an exploration of adaptable living and advanced mechanisms, with the potential to be realized in the future.

The Planetary Desk Lamp is a sculptural lighting object with a tall stone body and two brass light elements that create a balanced, celestial composition. Combining dual lighting modes with a rotatable base and refined details, it merges symbolism, precision, and versatility in one elegant form.

Description

The Planetary Desk Lamp is a sculptural lighting object developed from the design language of the AVEM lamp. Its tall conical marble body is available in either a white or black hollowed stone finish, giving the piece two distinct expressions: a lighter, more refined version and a darker, more atmospheric one. The lamp is anchored by a custom brass base plate, which also houses the power connection and allows the stone body to rotate 360°, letting you subtly adjust the direction of the light.

At the top of the cone, two brass rods extend in different directions, creating the impression of a single line passing through the stone and emerging at two points. Each end carries a spherical light element composed of brass and opal glass, with the glass covering two thirds of the sphere so the light can glow softly through it. The upper, longer arm is oriented downward and serves as a focused desk light, while the shorter lower arm points upward and acts as a room light that casts illumination into the surrounding space.

A small recessed brass button sits discreetly in a rounded cavity at the tip of the cone. It controls the lamp through four states: the first click activates the desk light, the second adds the room light, the third switches off the desk light while leaving the room light on, and the fourth turns the entire lamp off. A subtle integrated accent light near the button adds a quiet glow when one or both light sources are active, reinforcing the lamp’s planetary character.

The name Planetary Desk Lamp reflects the way the two illuminated ends orbit the central stone body like separate celestial objects, each following its own path around a shared core. The result is a balanced design that combines precision, symbolism, and functional versatility in one elegant object.

About

Luca

Artistic Approach
My work explores the space between control and intuition. I’m drawn to contrasts - structure and chaos, clarity and abstraction - and I use them to create pieces that invite interpretation rather than dictate it. Color plays a central role in my practice, often used boldly and in layered compositions to evoke emotion and depth. Each work is less about a fixed message and more about opening a dialogue between the viewer and the image.
Background & Perspective
I move fluidly between art and design, which strongly shapes how I think and create. While my artistic work is driven by expression and emotion, my background in design sharpens my sense for composition, balance, and intention. This dual perspective allows me to approach each piece with both freedom and precision.
Original Works & Prints
All artworks originate from my own practice and are carefully translated into high-quality prints to make them accessible beyond the original piece. Whether original or print, each work is created with the same attention to detail and respect for material, aiming to bring a distinct atmosphere into the spaces they inhabit.

Design Philosophy
My approach to design is rooted in clarity, intention, and purpose. I see design as a way of transforming ideas into tangible solutions - where form, function, and meaning are carefully aligned. Each object is shaped not only by aesthetics, but by how it is experienced and used.
Process & Perspective
Coming from an artistic background, I bring an intuitive and exploratory mindset into my design process. I often begin with open-ended experimentation, then refine ideas through structure and precision. This balance allows me to create designs that feel both thoughtful and distinctive.
Objects & Experience
I create objects that aim to integrate naturally into their environment while still carrying a subtle, defining presence. Materials, proportions, and details are considered carefully to achieve a sense of coherence and longevity - designs that are not only functional, but quietly expressive.
