Oculus Lamp

This piece is currently presented as a conceptual design. While fully developed in its function and engineering approach, the Turn Table has not yet entered production. The project reflects an exploration of adaptable living and advanced mechanisms, with the potential to be realized in the future.

The Oculus Lamp merges surrealist-inspired design with precise engineering, combining sculptural geometry and kinetic movement. With its adjustable form and smart control features, it transforms light into an interactive, artful experience.
Luca Ruffinengo

Description

The Oculus Lamp is a synthesis of surrealist art and high-precision engineering. Inspired by the pioneering works of Joan Miró, Kasimir Malevich, and Wassily Kandinsky, this lamp does not merely illuminate; it transforms the space it occupies. Standing at a total height of 700 mm, the design features a striking interplay of geometric forms - a translucent plexiglass globe perched atop a sand-coated iron base.

App Control

The name Oculus - the Latin word for "eye" - was chosen because the lamp’s unique kinetic form and its ability to rotate and orient itself in space evoke the feeling of a vigilant, watchful "eye" that actively perceives and shapes its environment through light.

The System

At its core, the lamp is designed for fluid interaction. A central ball connection linked to an expandable spring allows the light source to be rotated and positioned, enabling you to physically manipulate the direction and character of the light. Whether you adjust it manually or through the dedicated smartphone application, the lamp responds with smooth, graceful movement.Intelligent ControlBeyond physical movement, the lamp offers a complete digital interface. Through the companion app, you can fine-tune color, brightness, and schedule custom day/night cycles. The standout feature, "Light Concentration," uses the app to precisely map the lamp’s position in your room, allowing you to direct the light beam toward specific areas with pinpoint accuracy.

The Oculus Lamp is an object of art that invites you to play with light, merging the heritage of 20th-century abstraction with the limitless potential of modern smart-home technology.

About

Luca

Artistic Approach
My work explores the space between control and intuition. I’m drawn to contrasts - structure and chaos, clarity and abstraction - and I use them to create pieces that invite interpretation rather than dictate it. Color plays a central role in my practice, often used boldly and in layered compositions to evoke emotion and depth. Each work is less about a fixed message and more about opening a dialogue between the viewer and the image.
Background & Perspective
I move fluidly between art and design, which strongly shapes how I think and create. While my artistic work is driven by expression and emotion, my background in design sharpens my sense for composition, balance, and intention. This dual perspective allows me to approach each piece with both freedom and precision.
Original Works & Prints
All artworks originate from my own practice and are carefully translated into high-quality prints to make them accessible beyond the original piece. Whether original or print, each work is created with the same attention to detail and respect for material, aiming to bring a distinct atmosphere into the spaces they inhabit.

Design Philosophy
My approach to design is rooted in clarity, intention, and purpose. I see design as a way of transforming ideas into tangible solutions - where form, function, and meaning are carefully aligned. Each object is shaped not only by aesthetics, but by how it is experienced and used.
Process & Perspective
Coming from an artistic background, I bring an intuitive and exploratory mindset into my design process. I often begin with open-ended experimentation, then refine ideas through structure and precision. This balance allows me to create designs that feel both thoughtful and distinctive.
Objects & Experience
I create objects that aim to integrate naturally into their environment while still carrying a subtle, defining presence. Materials, proportions, and details are considered carefully to achieve a sense of coherence and longevity - designs that are not only functional, but quietly expressive.
