This is the third painting in my Barong series, continuing my exploration of the Balinese guardian deity associated with protection, balance, and the triumph of good over destructive forces. In Balinese mythology, Barong is a sacred spirit often depicted as a mythical lion-like creature, deeply connected to ritual, spirituality, and the maintenance of harmony.
In this painting, I wanted to emphasize Barong’s ceremonial and symbolic presence through bold color, symmetrical structure, and intricate ornamentation. The face is both playful and powerful, combining mask-like intensity with a sense of spiritual protection. The patterned background and layered surface extend the energy of the figure, creating a dialogue between order, decoration, and myth.
As part of the series, this work reflects Barong not only as a traditional deity, but also as a living symbol of resilience, cultural identity, and the ongoing struggle between light and darkness.
